TOUR N. 28: POMPEII

Pompeii, originally a native Oscan settlement founded in the 7th century BC, is 16 km south of Herculaneum. The city was conquered by Greeks and Etruscans, and finally became a Roman colony in 80 BC along with Herculaneum.
 Pompeii was a thriving, noisy market town of about 20.000 inhabitants, filled with shops and bars and small family factories. Traders constantly came and went, while wine and a potent fish sauce were Pompeii's most popular exports.
On the day Vesuvius erupted, Pompeii was the scene of a different but no less deadly series of catastrophes. Many stones showered down both on Pompeii and Herculaneum, while dense layers of ash settled at the rate of about 10 inches per hour. Roofs began to collapse and the town was in almost total darkness. The people who died waited too long inside their homes, trapped by fallen timbers and were unable to breath due to the volcano gas. Plan on spending at least two hours here. Apart from the amphitheatre, however, you won't find many places to sit and rest and the site is not well shaded. The most important sites are accessible to the public and others can be entered with a guide. Pompeii is the most visited excavation site in Italy.
 Overwhelmed by the eruption of the Vesuvius in the year 79 A.C. the city of Pompeii has for centuries captivated archaeologists from all over the world.
Digging slowly and regularly since 1748 until the discovery of Temples, Theatres, homes completely fixed in their action when they were submerged by the volcanic flood.
The historians have now made the city completely returned to the light.
This will give you the best opportunity to discover the greatest witness of the way of life at the times of the Roman Empire.

 Comfortable walking shoes and sun hats are recommended.
- A Pompeii tour is entirely on foot and involves around 2 hours of walking. To completely enjoy your Pompeii tour we suggest hiring an official English speaking licensed guide that we can find on site about 120,00 € (euro) for 2 hours (not included).
- If you like, you can ask your driver to modify your tour in any way.
- Entrance fee to Pompeii ruins is 11 € (euro).
- Pompeii is not wheel chair accessible.
- If you would like to have lunch our driver can suggest a snack bar, restaurant or pizzeria. To avoid unpleasant surprises its always best to inform your driver on how much you would like to spend and the time involved.
 Payments: All rates are quoted in EURO funds. Payment can be made in USD, Euro, Traveler's cheques or with Visa/MasterCard/American Express (add 5% for c/c). The fee for private guides must be paid in cash only (no Credit Cards).
Our rate includes a vehicle and English speaking driver-guide for the entire duration of this tour taxes, tolls, fuel and parking fees.
It does not include private guides, entrance fees, gratuities or meals unless mentioned in our confirmation.
Our English speaking driver will give a general overview regarding the history of the sites and monuments while in the car before you enter. He will allow all the time you need to visit with NO RUSHING as in group tours.
