LA SPEZIA-SHORE EXCURSION-9 hrs Pisa & Florence Driving Tour

One of our English speaking drivers will meet you at the gate of your port in La Spezia with the vehicle requested to begin the drive towards Pisa and then to Florence. Pisa with it’s extraordinary leaning tower and the famous Plaza of Miracles has attracted tourists from all over the world and is incredible when seen. After about a 1 hour visit of Pisa we can start our drive towards Florence which should take about 90 minutes. Florence has Etruscan-Roman origins and flourished during the Middle Ages as a free community. It became furtherly refined by the Renaissance Art and became enriched by the Medici family ruling and soon became the cradle of the Italian language. The city is located on both banks of the Arno river and surrounded by the Appenine mountains. Among the most famous, Florence is the home of Dante, Machiavelli, Michelangelo and the Medici Family. As we approach the city, we will stop for a beautiful view of Florence from Piazzale Michelangelo from where you will admire the tile roofs, steeples and domes. We will then begin our descent into the central downtown area of Florence to visit the Academy (the “David” and other masterpieces), the Duomo, the Baptistry, Giotto’s bell tower and Piazza della Signoria. We will proceed either on foot (we’ll be in the downtown walking area) to visit the other important monuments and the shopping areas. For those who love art and paintings we can also plan to visit the Uffizi gallery that home paintings of Cimabue, Giotto, Botticelli, Leonardo Da Vinci, etc. in 44 rooms full of spectacular works of art.

Lucca is a city that MUST be seen and visit with it’s many characteristic shops and restaurants. After our visit of Lucca we’ll head back to the ship to arrive around 5-5.30 pm. One of our English speaking drivers will be waiting for you near our ship’s gangway at about 8 AM to begin our trip towards Siena and towards the beautiful countryside of the Chianti region. Siena is the embodiment of a medieval city. Throughout the centuries, the inhabitants preserved their city’s Gothic appearance, acquired between the 12th and 15th centuries. The whole city of Siena is built around the Piazza del Campo, was devised as a work of art that blends into the surrounding landscape. Siena is certainly the place in Italy where the traditions and the way of life inherited from a prestigious history have been kept alive. Our next stop is San Gimignano, where you can admire the famous towers and also you can see the “Duomo” or Collegiate Church, the “Palazzo del Popolo”, the “Palazzo Nuovo del Podestà” (which is now the town hall), S. Agostino Church, the Museum of Holy Relics, and the infamous Museum of Torture, which displays early instruments of torture that reminds everyone that cruelty and violence existed even way back then. On a lighter note, there are numerous shops which sell local products including the “Vernaccia” wine. Our driver can stop at a nice trattoria where you can enjoy the excellent wines and a traditional Italian local meal, pizza or salad. During the transfer San Gimignano-Siena we can stop in Monteriggioni for a visit, without a doubt one of the most classical and best known Italian walled towns. The town was built by the Senesis in the years 1213-1219 on a hillock overlooking the Cassia Road. Its ideal position allowed controlling the Elsa and the Staggia Valleys in direction of Florence, the historic enemy of Siena. Here you’ll have the chance to taste a true Tuscany meal at the Castle of Monteriggioni.

After we’ve enjoyed this wonderful meal and wines we will have a nice sightseeing ride returning to the ship in the late afternoon.
