Your driver will greet you near the gangway of your ship with a sign with your name to begin your 45 minute drive to the Ostia Antica ruins. This tour is designed for those that have already enjoyed the major highlights of Rome and wish to visit other important sites around the city. We will visit this site for approximately 2 hours. Ostia Antica was originally (between 1400-400 B.C.) located at the mouth of the Mediterranean sea but due to the centuries of erosion is now located at about 2 miles from the beach. Ancient tradition suggests that Ostia was founded by the fourth king of Rome, Ancus Marcius approximately in the 7th century BC. Most of the buildings that have been excavated were built in the first half of the 2nd century A.D. when such notable emperors such as Trajan and Hadrian ruled. Ostia, the first Roman colony, became immediately a river port acquiring a commercial function to supply Rome with food, particularly wheat, even if its strategic military function as naval base certainly prevailed. We will then continue our tour heading towards the nearby Cerveteri ,the most famous attraction of Cerveteri is the Necropoli della Banditaccia, which has been declared by UNESCO a World Heritage Site together with the necropolis of Tarquinia. It covers an area of 400 hectares (990 acres), of which 10 hectares (25 acres) can be visited, encompassing a total of ca. 1,000 tombs often housed in characteristic mounds. It is the largest ancient necropolis in the Mediterranean area. The name Banditaccia comes from the leasing (bando) of areas of land to the Cerveteri population by the local landowners.
After this great day we’ll all get back on board and head back to your ship. The Tour includes: Duration 9 hrs English speaking driver-guide Luxury air-conditioned vehicle Taxes, tolls, parking fees, fuel, driver’s expenses The tours does not include: Meals and/or drinks Entrance fees to museums, attractions, private guides (unless specified) Gratuities (not mandatory) Our tours can all be Customized for you and your group. Therefore each tour can be modified while on tour by our expert English speaking driver guides to meet your complete satisfaction losing no time, but at your own pace, and visiting the most sites possible.
