Pompeii was a thriving, noisy market town of about 20.000 inhabitants, filled with shops and bars and small family factories. Traders constantly came and went, while wine and a potent fish sauce were Pompeii’s most popular exports. On the day Vesuvius erupted, Pompeii was the scene of a different but no less deadly series of catastrophes. Many stones showered down both on Pompeii and Herculaneum, while dense layers of ash settled at the rate of about 10 inches per hour. Roofs began to collapse and the town was in almost total darkness. The people who died waited too long inside their homes, trapped by fallen timbers and were unable to breath due to the volcano gas. Plan on spending at least two hours here. The most important sites are accessible to the public and others can be entered with a guide. Pompeii is the most visited excavation site in Italy. Overwhelmed by the eruption of the Vesuvius in the year 79 A.C. the city of Pompeii has for centuries captivated archaeologists from all over the world.

This itinerary has been designed for cruisers who would like to visit the archelogical site of the world famous ruins of Pompeii. This will be about a 2 hour walking tour that you can take with or without a tour guide. After Pompeii we will be off to visit Sorrento, a quiet, enjoyable and charming place famous for its mild climate, the perfume of its gardens the panoramic terraces, lovely open air markets where you can find cameos and fine articles of inlaid wood. The homes are surrounded by groves of olive, lemon and orange trees and the views are beautiful.After Sorrento we continue along the Amalfi coast, one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world. The scenery is characterised by mighty cliffs that drop in the sea, rich with bays and coves, winding and colourful. We can stop for photographs over the enchanting town of Positano with its famous high-fashion shops. Positano develops vertically. The homes, one on top of the other, are characterised by arched porticos that give onto the sea, and are painted in pastel colours.

Your driver can find a trattoria where you can enjoy a typical Italian meal, pizza or salad. We will spend the rest of the afternoon in Positano. Return to the ship late at 5 pm.

All streets leading to the waterfront are for pedestrians only so we must drop you off at the Piazza dei Mulini. Our first stop is for photographs over the enchanting town of Positano with Moorish looking architecture and famous high-fashion shops. The town develops vertically. The homes, one on top of the other, are characterised by arched porticos that give onto the sea, and are painted in pastel colours. The narrow streets, lined with boutiques and fashion shops, run downhill between the homes flowing onto Positano’s wide beach. From here you will have a beautiful view of the sea and the town, as it climbs up the mountainside. On Positano main plaza we’ll find the parish of Santa Maria Assunta, there since the year 1,000. The great coloured majolica cupola is visible from all over town. The little beaches of Positano are charming, and easy to get to on foot. We then continue along the coastline enjoying the flora and fauna, an area full of colour against the contrasting blue and emerald sea. On arrival at Amalfi you can visit the famous 9th century Duomo. Its scenic position will allow us to take in some beautiful scenery while arriving at Amalfi’s historic centre. One of our English speaking drivers will be waiting for you at your ship’s gangway at about 8 AM to begin our trip towards Siena and towards the beautiful countryside of the Chianti region. Siena is the embodiment of a medieval city. Throughout the centuries, the inhabitants preserved their city’s Gothic appearance, acquired between the 12th and 15th centuries. The whole city of Siena, built around the Piazza del Campo, was devised as a work of art that blends into the surrounding landscape. Siena is certainly the place in Italy where the traditions and the way of life inherited from a prestigious history have been kept alive. Next stop is San Gimignano, where you can admire the famous towers and also you can see the “Duomo” or Collegiate Church, the “Palazzo del Popolo”, the “Palazzo Nuovo del Podestà” (which is now the town hall), S. Agostino Church, the Museum of Holy Relics, and the infamous Museum of Torture, which displays early instruments of torture and reminds everyone that cruelty and violence existed even way back then. On a lighter note, there are numerous shops which sell local products including the “Vernaccia” wine. Our driver can stop at a nice trattoria where you can enjoy the excellent wines and a traditional Italian local meal, pizza or salad. During the transfer San Gimignano-Siena we can stop in Monteriggioni for a visit, without a doubt one of the most classical and best known Italian walled town. The town was built by the Senesis in the years 1213-1219 on a hillock overlooking the Cassia Road. Its ideal position allowed controlling the Elsa and the Staggia Valleys in direction of Florence, the historic enemy of Siena. Here you’ll have the chance to taste a true Tuscany meal at the Castle of Monteriggioni.

You will also have a shared boat ride along the coast. Beautiful territory where the sea meets land and merge to form a unique and suggestive sight. 18 kilometers of rocky coastline rich in little bays, beaches and deep waters overlooked by a chain of mountains that runs parellel to the seaside. The world famous Leaning Tower needs no presentation, but most likely not everyone knows that it was built to be the bell tower of the “Duomo” (Cathedral) of Pisa and therefore it is only one of the 3 masterpieces of the Romanesque architecture that is called the “Miracle Square”. Once there, (if you didn’t book over the internet) you can decide if you would like to go up the tower depending on the waiting time. One of our English speaking drivers will meet you at the gate of your port in La Spezia with the vehicle requested to begin the drive towards Lucca and then to Florence. Lucca, one of the most beautiful cities in Italy (not known by many). Like most cities in Italy it still shows Roman roots and style. Lucca’s defensive walls are perfectly preserved and once you’ve entered you’ll feel that you’ve returned to the past. Lucca is a city that MUST be seen and visit with it’s many characteristic shops and restaurants. After our visit of Lucca we’ll head back to the ship to arrive around 5-5.30 pm. After the visit of Lucca we can start our drive toward Florence. Florence has Etruscan-Roman origins and flourished during the Middle Ages as a free community. It became furtherly refined by the Renaissance Art and became enriched by the Medici family ruling and soon became the cradle of the Italian language. The city is located on both banks of the Arno river and surrounded by the Appenine hills. Among the most famous, Florence is the home of Dante, Machiavelli, Michelangelo and the Medici Family. As we approach the city, we will stop for a beautiful view of Florence from Piazzale Michelangelo from where you will admire the tile roofs, steeples and domes. We will then begin our descent into the central downtown area of Florence to visit the Academy (the “David” and other masterpieces), the Duomo, the Baptistry, Giotto’s bell tower and Piazza della Signoria. We will proceed either on foot (we’ll be in the downtown walking area) to visit the other important monuments and the shopping areas. For those who love art and painting we can also plan to visit the Uffizi gallery that home paintings of Cimabue, Giotto, Botticelli, Leonardo Da Vinci, etc. in 44 rooms full of spectacular works of art.
